CEGLUG has had its exclusive website for almost an year. The first version of the website was very naive in design but actually used advanced technologies like AJAX. Its developers - Sanath Kumar, Venkatakrishnan, Venkatanathan tried as much as possible to make the site extensible. The site actually used XML files to store articles. A php parser was written to parse the XML files and extract content, format and display them. You can have a glimpse of this version of the site here - http://www.ceglug.org/old_site/version_1
Now for the second release. This website was developed by a bigger team and was much more professional. Bhuvana Kotteswaran, Mahavir Rathinam Gautham, Sornakumar, Sriraam A S, Sunil Sakthi Kumar, Kannan Venkat and Vithoon developed this site. You can have a glimpse of this site here - http://www.ceglug.org/old_site/version_2 . Although this site was professional by design and functionality, posting new articles in the site was a cumbersome task. We also added a WIKI for CEGLUG so that articles could be posted there. The Wiki was not much user friendly and adding new pages in the Wiki was not intutive. All these problems lead to the new website being developed.
The new and improved website uses Joomla Content Management System. This simplifies the task of posting articles, user management, adding new links etc. We are so greatful to Joomla for providing such a great software. The new site has a host of other functionalities too. We have introduced a feature called CEGLUG Labs very much in line with Google Labs. We’re providing facilities for people to upload their code in CEGLUG Labs and also give some documentation for it. This can build up as a knowledge base for users who need ready code. Also we’re planning to introduce a similar feature for uploading student’s projects - very similar to code.google.com
Dont tell that we’re “Copying” from Google. Its free and open source world and we always have the rights to copy.
Enjoy your stay with CEGLUG. Also if you have any comments or ideas about the site, feel free to express them to us.
